On a chilly Sunday morning, I got the chance to spend time walking the Canal Du Midi with a new friend and the dog he was watching while he house-sat in a village close to Azille. The combination of a beautiful scenery, good conversation, and a dog makes for the perfect walk in my book.
Below is just one of the many trails you can take alongside the canal which stretches about 150 miles. It runs from the city of Toulouse to the Étang de Thau near the Mediterranean.
The Canal Du Midi is one of the oldest canals still in operation today, originally constructed for wheat trade, it is now primarily a go-to spot for tourists and boaters.
While many trees line the canal in this particular spot, last year many parts of it were lined by stumps after many disease-ridden trees died. All 42,000 plus trees will one day need to be replaced. A sad consequence of not taking care of the beauty nature has to offer. Until then, enjoy these pictures and maybe one day, you’ll get a chance to see the towering trees that have survived thus far.
